Arkansas-Specific Subsite Launched, FOIA Request Submitted

Greetings!

This subdomain of the KPS4Parents website has been created to keep track of our ongoing efforts to better understand and develop an accurate overview of the state of special education in Arkansas.  It is our hope that this content will help inform parents, policymakers, public education personnel, and interested taxpayers about the facts regarding special education in Arkansas and what can be done to ensure appropriate student outcomes, build positive collaborations between parents and the public school system, and improve inter-agency involvements.

To that end, we have written a records request pursuant to the Arkansas Freedom of Information Act, which will be mailed out via Certified Mail on January 11, 2010.  The tracking number for this piece of correspondence is 7006 0810 0004 5974 1426, the delivery of which can be tracked online at http://www.usps.com.

Our initial focus is inspired by the events involving Fort Smith 5th Grader Zakhqurey Price.  We are starting out by looking at what programming and strategies are currently being employed in Arkansas for students who are eligible for special education and who have autism spectrum disorders.  This includes students who have autism spectrum disorders only as well as those with dual- and multiple diagnoses.

Anyone is welcome to sign up and contribute to this blog-formatted site.  All contributions are moderated to keep haters at bay.  In time, we will expand the scope of our examination of special education issues in Arkansas beyond this initial starting point.  Please contribute and/or reply with your comments.  We’re looking forward to your active participation.
